Question Mirror Mount and Laser Detection

I recently received a Passport 9500ix for my birthday along with a MirrorMount, and I was curious if the positioning of the 9500ix with the mirror mount would have any negative effect on the ability of the 9500ix to detect legitimate laser readings. Thank you!

There are several threads on the forum about this already, as well as on other authoritative websites like GuysofLidar.com and RadarDetector.org.

The short answer is that mounting a Radar detector high on a windshield is considered better for detecting radar, while positioning it low is better for Laser detection. That said, it's commonly believed that if you are detecting a Laser "hit", it means that the LEO already has logged your speed. Laser isn't like Radar.

For more complete protection against Laser threats, you might want to consider reactive counter measures like Laser Shifters / Jammers (such as Escort's LaserShifter Pro), and passive measures (such as Laser Veil).

Best wishes!

^^what he said

If laser is a big threat you need shifters to be actually protected. Laser detection in most cases is ticket detection.

Funny thing, I got back for a trip the other day, and a State trooper was on top of the over pass I was getting off. Anywho, I took a Ka blast from him, and moments later got a Laser hit. As we know Laser does not have the range of Radar, and Laser requires much more precise aiming. So when your department has plenty of revenue, what do you do? Use Radar to nuke the whole freeway, and pound the nail in the coffin with Laser.
Never seen this overkill approach, but sure is an effective way to win in court without doubt!
My 9500ix picked up the Laser without issue, but again he was aiming down towards us. Mine is mounted high btw, and there was no traffic in front of me.

Ron, how does this scenerio help in court? The LEO can only tag you on the citation with Lidar or radar. If he gets a "capture" with lidar he will always go with that. Not sure why the blast of Ka...........but interesting all the same.

I really not sure why I got both, but he was the only trooper in the area, and I could only guess he was just indiscriminately nuking the whole busy freeway listening for his preset over speed deal while eating his McDonalds, and using laser for the actual kill shot. LOL
Not saying he used both to super convict you.

I've always mounted my 9500ix up near the mirror, and have had pretty good success receiving a Ka signal in hilly country. On my normal route, there is a local sheriff that sits at the bottom of a hill, (yes there are a few hills in LA), shooting on coming traffic and I can usually detect him at about a mile. I recently started mounting the RD about 10"lower, to just above the WS wipers. The first thing I noticed was an approximate 500' reduction in detection, just from moving the RD 10" lower. The car is a '14 SHO.
