Angry Got a ticket

I got a ticket today, and I'm trying to figure out what went wrong. I rounded a gradual curve, and saw two motorcycle LEOs up ahead. My foot went for the brake, but I was almost instantly was hit with a one-two punch of Ka band and Laser. The Ka guy pulled me over and wrote the ticket. We talked about it briefly, he said his buddy was using the Laser.

So, why didn't my 9500ix pick up the Ka? I have gotten good detection in that location before, so I don't think it was the curve in the road. Furthermore, the Ka was on and then off. Every time I've encountered Ka before in Plano, TX, it was always on, even when the patrol SUV was stopped.

I know Plano must have bought some laser guns recently, because they've started popping up only in the last week. Could they have bought some POP radars as well? Is that what POP is like when you get hit? Should I plug the 9500ix into the computer and turn POP detection on?

Thanks for any advice you all have got. I know I'm new here, but I've been meaning to join for a while. Today's experience just motivated me to actually fill out the form. ;-)

OK.......need some more info here.

1. It sounds like the 9500ix did in fact alert to the Ka radar. Is this correct?

2. Did you have the detector in Spec mode......ie. did you get a frequency reading on the detector?

3. Was there any traffic in front of you and if so, how far ahead?

4. How sharp was the curve and what was bordering the road.......shrubs / trees / buildings etc.

5. How far away were you when/if the detector alerted?

Sounds like Instant On radar to me. But answer nine's questions and he'll give you all the info you need.

1. It sounds like the 9500ix did in fact alert to the Ka radar. Is this correct? Yes. There were 2 LEOs, one with Ka and one with Laser. The 9500ix picked up both, but the Ka alert was as brief as the laser, and a split second sooner.

2. Did you have the detector in Spec mode......ie. did you get a frequency reading on the detector? No. Newb mode.

3. Was there any traffic in front of you and if so, how far ahead? No, not for a long way. I was first out of the red light, so all traffic was behind me.

4. How sharp was the curve and what was bordering the road.......shrubs / trees / buildings etc. It was not very sharp, the SL on the road is 40mph. A Big gradual curve. Inside the curve, where the LEO was, is a slight hill. No buildings or shrubs.

5. How far away were you when/if the detector alerted? Very close. Maybe 1/10th of a mile. I saw them before the detector went off.

Answers above.. Thanks for the help, I've been reading about IO and I think that's probably it.

I've really been kicking myself. I saw them get someone there Friday, with no alert at all, which made me figure they had some new laser guns. I wish I'd marked it as a trap then. I'll definitely be marking it on my way home. :-P

Instant on. The "Speed Trap ahead" have saved me a couple of times. should've marked it.

Ok.....It wasn't POP radar as your 9500ix would not have alerted to a POP shot. Certainly IO, but it may not have been as brief as you think since the Laser alert would overide it.

2. Did you have the detector in Spec mode......ie. did you get a frequency reading on the detector? No. Newb mode.

I'd put the detector in Spec Mode........very valuable in that we can tell what specific radar you are getting hit with on Ka Band. Any of the newer units can pull quick IO shots but only the MPH running at 33.8 GHZ can pull real POP shots. Again, since your detector alerted to Ka I'm pretty sure that was not a POP radar. DO NOT put the detector into POP mode unless you are sure the Police in your area are running 33.8 Bee units or Enforcer units. POP mode creates a ton of Ka falses and slows down the detector on other bands.

3. Was there any traffic in front of you and if so, how far ahead? No, not for a long way. I was first out of the red light, so all traffic was behind me.

Well........this is how it goes without making sure a rabbit is ahead to draw fire for you. The LEO always has the advantage if he chooses to use his equipment correctly. In this case he was patient and kept the radar on hold until you got into his cross hairs.

4. How sharp was the curve and what was bordering the road.......shrubs / trees / buildings etc. It was not very sharp, the SL on the road is 40mph. A Big gradual curve. Inside the curve, where the LEO was, is a slight hill. No buildings or shrubs.

Sligth curve with a hill on the inside. Most good detectors including your 9500ix can pick up around bends..........but you can't pick up anything unless the LEO is transmitting. Chances are he did plug a few targets well ahead of you but you have to be within a reasonable distance from the curve (and hill that was blocking) to pick up the weak scatter. Again........I think lack of rabbits is the main culprit.

5. How far away were you when/if the detector alerted? Very close. Maybe 1/10th of a mile. I saw them before the detector went off.

This just confirms that the LEOs picked a good ambush spot. The closer you are before getting a visual on them, the better the trap. They not only stay out of sight until the last minute, it also puts the main beam of the radar well out of alignment with distant approaching vehicles with Radar Detectors.

I'd bet those bozos were having a little competition on who could pick off the targets coming around the bend first. Radar is probably a little faster since no aim is required so the Radar cop got the kill.

Sorry to hear you got bagged, but with instant on your only defense is tailing a good rabbit within a reasonable distance (close enough to pick up IO shots on him......but far enough back to keep from getting bagged yourself). Most modern radars have a fastest target window so you don't want to get TOO close to that rabbit.

Lesson learned........your life expectancy is greatly reduced when running point guard for other traffic!
