I'll be there for a week next month and will be traveling the entire Ring Road around the island. PSL is 90 kph which is a unpleasant throwback to the way things used to be here in the US before 1987. Can anyone tell me if the Redline/9500ix detectors will work there? I can't seem to find any information on what they use for speed detection.
Thanks! |

I believe for detection in Iceland they roll a rock beside the roadway and if you pass the rock you are speeding.
Seriously though and with no insult intended to the fine people of Iceland, I have a friend whose wife is from Iceland and will ask her what they use. They both go back there to visit family and so should have a good idea. Ciao Last edited by Krazy-K; June 22nd, 2014 at 10:32 AM. |

With 80% of the population of Iceland living in Reykjavik the likelihood of seeing a patrol car is slim on the ring road. I was able to find out that they use Falcon radar in K band frequency. The biggest threat you may face is photo radar which is everywhere due to lack of manpower and I will only assume the photo runs also on a K band wavelength. The up side is that all those photo locations are well marked/signed. The downside is that even if you are using a rented car you will be paying your fine when you return the car. Fines are steep. Speed limit as you mentioned is 90Kph, or 55Mph. Ten to 20Mph over will cost you a $816 USD fine. Thirty to 40Mph over is a whopping $2100USD ticket! I would say that your RD's would work fine and they are legal in Iceland. Have a safe holiday.

What a great response...thanks so much! I'm thinking we will take the wife's 9500ix because the defender database should help with the photo radar locations. I know Waze had them all marked in Continental Europe so between the both of them we will hopefully be ok.
Again...thanks for the reply. |

One last question...is the Defender database that includes Iceland available for download here in the US?

Your Passport 9500ix does not include camera locations in Iceland. Only 9500ix "International" models have these locations. You cannot load an international database onto your 9500ix.
As for radar, either detector will detect all forms of radar used in Iceland. Typically only mobile speed cameras use radar or laser.

Is that a function of limited memory space in the 9500ix? You would think that databases could be substituted even if that were the case.
I guess it's back to Waze for this sort of thing. |

I don't think you'll need an international version. After traveling the entire Ring Road with my Redline I only ran into radar two times outside of the Reykjavik area. Both were Ka band radars and detection range was better than two miles in each case. Even in Reykjavik radar encounters were few and far between. In all cases the police radar was in constant transmit mode.
All speed cameras do not use radar in any of the bands the Redline can detect. I'm not sure what method they use. As far as I know every camera is marked by a sign prior to you driving in front of it. With the exception of the tunnels in the mountains the only speed cameras on the island are within 100 km of Reykjavik and along the Golden Circle Route. From what I was told some of these may no longer be in working order. I did get one laser alert out in the middle of nowhere that certainly was not from a laser shot. I have no idea what set it off. Your detector will alert constantly on K band in Reykjavik. Lots of door openers there. If I can answer any other questions about Iceland just post them here. |
