"I originally installed the EL DW for my 9500ix to add bluetooth,...".

That is my current setup, as I await buying a Max II or whatever. As I wait, what would I gain (if anything) if I purchase a year of the defender database to use with my current setup? I read a confusing post that indicated having EL DW with the 9500ix gives you the same protection with or without the defender database (hard for me to believe).

Escort Live includes Defender database locations. If you use Escort Live with a 9500ix, then you will receive Defender alerts from Escort Live. When you are not using Escort Live, or if you are outside of cellular coverage, then the 9500ix will use its installed Defender database.

Purchasing a Defender subscription is to keep the detector-installed Defender database up to date.

Well, I took everyone's advice and picked up a Max II. I bought it from another person. Now, I can't see the display. I have set it to maximum (in a dark garage you can see the word maximum) however, the display cannot be seen. After reading more now about the Max II, I have come to realize that it has a very prevalent problem with the display getting so weak it becomes unusable. Does the company step up and fix this, or am I just out of luck?

If your previously-owned Max II is more than a year old, it won't be covered by any warranty. It can be serviced for a fee, but I'd recommend that you return it to the person from whom it was purchased and buy a new one.

If I use the unusable display Max II, in conjunction with my Escort Live direct wire (it seems tofunction ok with the Max II) am I getting almost all information when I combine their use with the Live app displayed on my smartphone? I know I'm probably missing some strength (distance) information. I just cannot afford to replace this (new to me) Max II that I got from an ebay rip off cheat.

It sounds to me like you are not really giving up anything. With EL on your phone you have an alternative to the display. Virtually all detectors even have a dark display mode for some users who don't want to see a display at all.

I rarely look at my display with the RD mounted on the passenger's side of my rearview mirror. I rely mainly upon the sounds and voice alerts which allows me to focus on the road. So don't beat yourself up. You've figured a nice effective workaround and by using EL you have access to the most current database without having to pay for a Defender subscription.

With the MAX II's integrated Bluetooth you only need a Smartcord and not the Smartcord Live that you used to give your 9500ix EL connectivity, but if your setup is working you may just want to leave it alone.
Also check to be sure that the MAX II has the latest IVT software update.
