June 2012 Road and Track has an ad for the IQ on Page 31 (thirity one) that makes it seem like the IQ is all new or has been substantially upgraded? Can anyone confirm? The ad says:
Now with Enhanced Graphics, New Features and Black Design??? Does anyone know when the "improved IQ" was released??? |

The only physical change is the black faceplate. If you have the silver faced iQ then you can get the new, and greatly improved, operating software for free as an update through Detector Tools.

They are listed in the New iQ Software Is Available On Detector Tools stickied thread. They are:
1. Enhanced map graphics. 2. Emergency button on main screen. 3. Moved actual speed by speed limit sign. 4. Actual speed background turns red if you’re over user selected "over speed". 5. Ability to toggle between map and detector screen by touching the speed limit sign. 6. TSR enabled by default 7. Saved other locations to favorites instead of just Home or Work. 8. Improved search feature within a city that has multiple zips. 9. User selected route avoidance for toll or highway along with shortest and fastest route. 10. Increased larger view of map on screen when on or off route. 11. When you’re on route you can toggle the bottom right corner bar that has ETA to show the actual street you’re on. 12. At start up, user can select whether they want Escort Classic alert tones or Mild Chime tone.

Can you post a side by side screen shot of the "old" vs "new" map
Also, is there a list of searchable POI's available somewhere? |

Newer Passport iQ's have a black faceplate. They are pre-loaded with the new operating software and maps. Older iQ's had a silver faceplate. Please note that the Passport iQ's hardware has been the same since it was launched.
The updated software referenced to above is available as a free update so even if you buy an old one then you will be able to update the operating software. The map updates are available by calling our service department at the number below.

but is the maps and OS loaded on this black faceplated unit, the OS and map update that occurred back in the beginning to middle of 2011 or has there been more updates since? The map update and OS everyone seems to be speaking of in the forums is an update that occurred a long time ago and would now be outdated again (today - 7/17/2012) |

The latest maps are 2011 maps, black faceplate iQ's have these maps installed. I am not sure when we will have newer maps available.
