Danoelise, I don't think that there is enough voltage available on USB to power-up Radar Detectors that use the cigarette lighter socket. For example, the 9500ix requires 12V DC; I don't know what the max current is. The maximum voltage found on USB cables is 5V DC, and a maximum current of 900 mA.
In short, there's just not enough power on a USB port to run most RDs, (not excluding battery-operated ones, of course). You can consider the SmartCord Live! cable, though.
