Be sure that the 8500ci Plus is powered on when you connect it to your computer. Does your computer recognize the connected and powered on 8500ci Plus? It should "ding" when you connect the system and power it on.

rocky, with the 8500ci Plus powered on and plugged into the USB port of your computer, see if the 8500ci Plus is recognized under the ports section in Device Manager and report back.
Thank you

First, do not apply power to the 8500ci when updating it. Simply plug in the USB to your computer to update it. Applying power the system before plugging in the USB to your computer can actually prevent an update.
Second, what does it say for the 8500ci Plus in Windows Device Manager? It should say "PASSPORT 8500ci Plus International (COM XX)"

I was originally incorrect. The 8500ci/Plus should be updated with the power off.

Also, be sure that the USB cable is not connected to your computer with the 8500ci powered on. If it is, or has been powered on with a USB connection to your computer then unplug the USB cable, power off the system, and then plug the USB cable back in and restart Detector Tools.
