Most any headphones or earbud would work. I parted out a broken headphone and mounted in the places provided in the helmet.
Much better is a visual alert. I will never go back! (EscortRadar: link removed, please do not post links to detector-related product sales, google: Marc Parness Visual Alert) Last edited by jkhomes; October 19th, 2011 at 04:38 PM. |

I've been through a number of ways for the bike.
I used the H.A.R.D. alert system, which is a simpler device than the Viz-version (the Viz tells you what type of alert where the H.A.R.D. does not). Pros: * instant alerts * solves the issue of knowing when RD goes off * Total wow-factor for other bikers to see it Cons: * pricey * batteries...ugh..the batts, especially if you forget to turn it off * not waterproof * kinda fragile when changing batts * if you ride all day and forget about it, after dark if you get an RD alert, it lights up your whole helmet blinding you (funny incident as I immediately reached up with left hand and grabbed the LED to cover it while I'm laughing and braking at the same time). Easily fixed by angling the LED away when it goes to night I finally went to the audio solution as it's just simpler to deal with on a day to day basis: * Can hear type of alert, works great with the voice alerts too * Mounted cable at my waist to avoid the cable pulling on my head * if you use a raw-patch cable, you'll have a buzzing feedback in the line * I haven't tried Escort's cable, hopefully it is electrically matched to not have that feedback. * I use an audio mixer to mix in the MP3 with the RD (RD signal mutes the MP3 audio) * As a matter of policy, I have banned Señor Hagar from the motorcycle MP3 playlist (poor LEO who wasn't using radar chased me for several miles before I could even see him in my mirror) |

The earplugs I use are the Etymotic er6i model. I absolutely love them! I haven't tried their new MC5's...which look to be similar. If I was setting up my system all over again, I'd skip the pricey "mixer" and go with: * er6i * Escort's Motorcycle Adapter * Simple 3.5" stereo reverse splitter (two female plugs/one male plug) which can be found for about $5 online. |
